Fairytales, Reality + A Perfectly Elegant Evening: John and Cheryl – a Grand Tradition Estate Wedding

I think I enjoy wedding toasts more as a photographer than as a guest. As a photographer, you get to know the bride and groom in the months leading up to their wedding, but there’s something that’s uncovered during the speeches that just kind of fills in the gaps for me, and yes, often it’s the point that gets my tear ducts producing.

There was already a pretty special place in my heart for John and Cheryl when their wedding day rolled around. The two have such a love for each other, their happiness is ridiculously contagious. But first hearing John’s impromptu speech about all the hard work Cheryl put in to the wedding, and then hearing about her thanksgiving dinners that friends stop eating in anticipation for – I get to learn just how amazing these people are to their friends and family as well.

It rained on the morning that John and Cheryl were married. It rained in the middle of summer in Southern California. With thunder, lightning, and all the rest. As I was freaking out, trying to dig my rain gear out of the back of my closet, I knew in the back of my mind that one thing I wouldn’t need to freak out about was my bride freaking out.

If Cheryl wasn’t a nurse, (which I’m pretty sure she’s perfect at) she would make an amazing wedding coordinator. She planned the perfect wedding. Right down to the last bit of bling that she glued on to her shoes, and the toys and games on the kids table. And to be honest, rain would put a little damper on the day’s events. But I knew Cheryl would be perfectly fine as long as her friends and family were there to witness her marry the man she loves. And I knew John would be fine as long as Cheryl was happy.

John and Cheryl, thank you for letting me be a part of your day. It was fairytale-perfect. And, more importantly, thank you for reminding me to not sweat the small stuff, and focus on the important things life.
